Eating & Drinking

fish_and_chipsLondon has a huge range of restaurants and cafes catering for all tastes and budgets. One of the great joys of eating out here is the diversity of the ethnic restaurants that reflect the mix of cultures in the capital. Londoners' insatiable interest in discovering new foods and tastes ensures that there are plently options for eating out.

Many restaurants open for lunch around 12.00 and serve until 14.30 or 15.00, then reopen for dinner around 18.00 until 23.30. Depending on the menu, many will be open all day.

If you are watching your budget then some pre-theatre menus offer good value, although the choice will be restricted. Pub meals are one of the cheapest options and can be very satisfying. Most restaurants have vegetarian dishes on the menu, and there are dedicated vegetarian restaurants too.

A service charge of 10-12 per cent is often included in the bill. If not, a tip is customary, and you may want to leave more or less depending on the service.

Old British favourites such as steak and kidney pudding, sausages, roast beef and even fish and chips are given the star treatment at many gastropubs. For real London fare, look for a traditional pie and mash shop serving savoury pies, mashed potatoes and fresh eels, there are still a few in the East End.
